2020 has already been full of up and downs and not-so-great surprises, so why not read a horror novel? I don’t really read horror or thrillers because I am such a scaredy-cat, but I kept seeing this book being recommended so I thought that I would give it a shot. If I have nightmares, so be it.
First off, I loved that this book mentions Pedro Infante a few times. If you know me even just one bit, you know that I LOVE Pedro Infante. I have watched his movies since I was young. And I don’t mean, oh yeah, he is an actor that would sometimes be in movies we saw. I mean we had a collection of all his movies and would watch at least 2 every month since I was 5. Every year for my mom’s birthday I play his version of “Las Mañanitas” for her. “Cien Años” is my late grandfather’s love song to my grandma. My mom’s side of the family is from Sinaloa where he grew up and we all treasure him very much. He is a huge part of our lives. So, when I started this book and saw that within the first chapter it talks about how one of the guys the main character was seeing looks like Pedro Infante, I knew I had made the right choice to make this novel my last read for 2020. I know that this was not a huge part of the book and had nothing to do with the plot, but thank you Silvia Moreno-Garcia for making my reading experience that much more special.
Now for the rest of the book. I really did not know what to expect from this book, but let me tell you, Silvia Moreno-Garcia definitely has an intense imagination. I hear that this book is going to be a TV Show (maybe??) so I am excited to see her imagination come to life on-screen. I will not go too much into the plot or reveal any of the monsters/villians, you should just go check it out for yourself! This book was 300 pages but a very quick read. I finished it in about 3 days. If I can do it, so can you 🙂
Happy New Year everyone and I hope to be writing a lot more in 2021!
